Considered one of the finest one day walks in the world, New Zealands Tongariro Crossing travels over the amazing volcanic alpine landscape of Mount Tongariro in the Tongariro National Park on the North Islands Central Plateau.. The 19.4 km walk takes you up the Mangatepopo valley to the Mangatepop saddle before crossing South Crater which lies between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe..From South Crater it is uphill again to the highest point of the crossing, the dramatic Red Crater, with views for miles in good weather. As you descend you are greeted with the spectacular view across Central Crater to Blue Lake and Lake Taupo in the distance as well the much photographed Emerald Lakes nestled below Red Crater..After crossing Central Crater the track then travels along a low ridge next to Blue Lake before starting the long descent down past Ketetahi hut and hot springs to Okahukura Bush and the end of the walk.
